Things to Do with
Trash Bags

Below you will find several things to do with trash bags that you may not have thought about. And believe it or not, a garbage bag is one of the best items to carry in your backpack, RV, or car when you go camping or backpacking.

We recommend using the heavy duty lawn & leaf bags. As you will see, they do much more than just hold garbage, and they weigh very little and take up almost no space.

  • Line your sleeping bag stuff sack or clothes bag to waterproof it.
  • Use a garbage bag to make a pack cover in a down pour.
  • Keep wet clothes and gear separated from dry items.
  • Put a trash bag on the ground in your tent's vestibule to make a "mud room".
  • Make an emergency shelter with two trash bags, some duct tape, and some rope. Cut the ends open, tape them together to make a "tube", and run your rope through it between two trees.
  • Use a trash bag as a poncho. Just cut or tear holes for your head and arms.
  • Wearing a garbage bag will also add a lot of warmth. Just be aware that your perspiration will not be able to escape, so avoid sweating if you can.
  • If it's cold enough to freeze your boots or shoes, put them inside a garbage bag and then sleep with them in the bottom of your sleeping bag.
  • If you have to melt snow for water, collect the snow in the trash bag. You might be surprised how much snow is needed to get enough water for cooking and drinking and a trash bag holds a lot more snow than your cook pot.
  • Put any trash that you may find at campsites or along the trail in a garbage bag to help keep our wild places pristine.
  • In an emergency situation fill some trash bags with dry leaves, pine needles, etc. and use them as a bed or as a blanket.
  • If you know of other things to do with trash bags please feel free to send them to us.
