Camping Snacks

A lot of times lunch is replaced with camping snacks because everyone is just having too much fun to have a traditional sit-down meal. And if you're only munching on boring old trail mix, then check out these great snack recipes. You'll learn how to take Good Old Raisins and Peanuts ("GORP") and turn it into a tasty explosion. And check out the other camping snack recipes, too. If you've got others to add to our collection, then please share them with us.

Before we get into specific recipes, let's go over one of the most tried and true camping snacks out there - Trail mix, a.k.a. - GORP. GORP stands for "good old raisins and peanuts." While it packs good flavor, protein, carbs, and sodium to refuel you on camping trips, it does tend to get old after awhile. So let's go over some great additions for GORP before we get into other snack recipes.

Here's what you can add to your GORP next time you head out into the great outdoors:

  • Dried fruit - this packs a lot of nutrients into a small package. The next time you make a big batch of trail mix be sure to try dried apples, apricots, pineapple, dates, banana chips, blueberries, and even prunes. These are just a few of our favorites.

  • Candy - This will sweeten up your trail mix while adding texture, chewiness, and calories. Chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, M&M's, Reeses Pieces, Snickers Bites, Butterfinger BB's... The choices are endless. Be careful with these when camping or backpacking in the summer since these all could melt and make a mess.

  • Crunchy Snacks - pretzles, corn chips, corn nuts, soy nuts, sesame sticks, granola, tortilla chips, croutons, etc.

  • Other Nuts - You don't have to stick with peanuts alone. Add some almonds, macademia nuts, cashews, walnuts, and any of your favorites. A variety of nuts will add healthy fats to your gorp.

  • Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Vegetables - corn, peas, tomatoes, onions... Don't be afraid to try some of these. I know it sounds a little weird, but they really do liven up the mix.

  • Seasoning - Adding some different seasonings can really change the whole feel of trail mix. Here are just a few to try - cayenne pepper, curry, cardomom, cinnamon, chili powder, creole seasoning, thai seasoning, etc. The spicy seasonings are really great while camping in cold weather.
  • Just get a large bowl, and start adding ingredients. You don't have to be exact or scientific. Just go crazy. Mix it really well, and then store in an air-tight container. Repackaging the GORP into portion-sized zipper lock bags is a good idea before you head out on your next camping or backpacking trip.
