But before we dive right in, let's first go over some foods that almost everybody takes on a camping or backpacking trip. We won’t go into the details of these foods since most people know how to prepare them, but we will share some tips on how to make these classics even better.

Macaroni and Cheese
  • Add slices of your own cheese to the noodles and cheese sauce to make it even creamier and better.
  • On a cold night try adding pepper-jack cheese, some hot sauce, or cayenne pepper.
  • Don’t be afraid to add some vegetables or meat into the mac-n-cheese.
  • You can also use dried veggies. Make sure you re-hydrate them before adding them by placing them into warm water for 20 to 30 minutes or into cool water for several hours.

  • Spaghetti or Pasta
  • Add dried foods to the sauce. Sun dried tomatoes and dried shitake mushrooms add a ton of flavor and texture to your sauce. Again, make sure you re-hydrate them first.
  • Spice it up. You don't have to use the plain old sauce by itself. Add fresh garlic and onion or use garlic and onion flakes or powder or whatever spices you like.
  • Use different types of noodles like bow ties, rigatoni, or spirals.
  • They make different colored pasta, too. This adds variety to the appearance of your pasta dishes.

  • Rice
  • Use different kinds of rice like wild rice and brown rice instead of plain old white rice. They have more flavor and are more nutritious too.
  • Once again, add fresh vegetables or dried veggies after you re-hydrate them.
  • Add black beans or red beans for beans and rice.
  • Add powdered milk, butter, a little brown sugar and some dried fruit to white rice for a sweet treat.
  • You can also make fried rice. Boil the rice for a little while, and then fry it in butter or oil.
